Katie J's Winter Essentials

Hello my lovelies, I hope you're all well and are enjoying the crisp feeling of winter. This post is very fitting to write today as the wind is crisp cold outside and all of the leaves are officially autumnal, aka browns, yellows, reds, and oranges. So this post is going to be all of the things I cannot go without in winter from makeup to medicine that I feel it is vital to carry with you through the season. 

1. Jumpers 

Having a jumper in the winter is an absolute must from. I own more jumpers than anything else in my wardrobe. The main reason you need jumpers in your winter collection is pretty obvious, number one: its cold, and, number two: they're gonna keep you warm and toasty in the colder months to come. 

I have many different jumpers in loads of different colours. I probably have a jumper of at least every shade of the rainbow. But if you don't have any jumpers I suggest you get yourself down to the high street and pick up some new ones for this years winter. My favourite shops to get jumpers from are Primark, H&M, and Newlook; they usually have some really lovely ones so go and check some out!

2. Boots

If you don't have some kind of boots in your winter collection are you even into the season? Boots are one of the most practical shoes ever - they keep your feet dry, go with almost every outfit, and they keep your feet warm. 

I don't know what I'd do without boots in my life, especially my snow boots. The minute I put those on they never come off - I wear them whole way through winter because they're warm, protect me from all weathers, and they're white which is one of my favourite winter colours because of snow etc. 

Boots are sold in near enough every fashion retail store when winter hits us, so you can find boots almost anywhere. Were going to need some in the upcoming months of rain and snow, so go and buy yourself some if you haven't already! 

3. Winter Coat 

You can't not get yourself a new coat for the winter. I get a new coat every year and they're roughly pretty similar. Protects me from the rain but has warm material on the inside to keep me warm with pockets down the front to put my hands in (if I'm an idiot and forget my gloves) and it has to have a hood (again, if I'm an idiot and forget an umbrella). But coats are probably the biggest essential when it's cold. 

You can buy coats from any fashion retailer and from any super market that sells clothing. This year I got my coat from Sainsbury's and it is super cosy.  

4. Scarf and Gloves

Scarf and Gloves go hand in hand for me, if I'm wearing one, I've gotta wear the other - especially when they're matching like in this image. To be honest, they're probably two of my favourite winter accessories because they're there for a purpose - to keep you warm and they're in really nice patterns and colours therefore you can style them to go with your outfit or to your personality. 

Recently I bought some gloves from Primark and they're so soft and very girly. They were only £1.00! and they do feel really nice quality. So if you want some new gloves and scarf's go and check out Primark. They've got some lovely winter clothing items as of right now. I really want to go and get a new scarf from there and a fury neck cardigan/ coats (they're selling both kinds - I want both!) 

5. Vaseline 

One of the biggest essentials for me is Vaseline! I get chapped lips every year, they haven't been as bad this year as I've been wearing this or Baby Lips on a daily basis so my lips have been pretty nourished this year. 

But usually that's when I know it's winter time as I always get chapped lips. So if your normal lip balm isn't helping your sore lips, go down to Boots or Superdrug and get yourself a tin of Vaseline! 

6. Baby Lips 

In the winter I can't live without Baby Lips by Maybelline. They are so moisturising and keep your lips looking healthy. But they also give your lips colour. I usually wear these when I can't be bothered to put a lipstick on or if I simply don't have the time to put one on as for me lip gloss or lipstick is an essential for me all year round. 

7. Glitter Nail Polish

Oh my god, I cannot stress to all of you guys enough how important glitter nail polish is anyway, but in winter time it is the biggest essential (obviously for Christmas). 

Glitter nail polish is really easy to layer and it usually dries quick if it is a chunky polish. In the winter it's my favourite thing to wear as the glitter twinkles in every light it hits and makes you look like you've had a really expensive manicure done. When in reality you've only spent £3.99 in Barry M and painted them yourself. Can't go wrong! 

Especially gold, red, green, and silver - the four essential Christmas glitter's you need in your life! 

8. Red Lipstick 

I don't know how any girl can go through the season without a red lipstick. It is the one colour that can make a simple look into a killer statement. 

I've always got red lipstick on during the Christmas period especially (speaking of which, I need a new one!) as it goes so well with brows, golds, coppers etc. 

Every woman needs one in her lipstick collection! 

9. Cosy Socks 

A massive shout out goes to Primark for this one! Primark is one of my favourite shops like most people, but their cosy socks are the absolute best! You can buy them in so many different colours and they are always perfectly cosy.

I wear them for bed and when I'm out in my boots on a cold winter day because my feet get cold really easily and you can't beat some nice cosy socks to keep your feet lovely and toasty. 

99.9% of the time whenever I go to Primark I go and get a new pair because a girl can never have enough! 

10. Boot Slippers 

I don't normally wear slippers very often, but as we've established my feet get very cold in the winter months. But I love wearing slipper boots because they keep your feet extra toasty and warm. You can also get them in many patterns and colours which I love. They are also a lot more stable than just flat slippers. 

I have a pink pair which I wear all the time and I've had those for 2/3 years now and they're still in perfect condition mostly. Even though, I'd love a new pair! 

The First Month At Uni: What It's Really Like

Hello my lovelies, I hope you are all well and are super excited for Christmas! It is officially only 7 weeks away and I couldn't be more happy as we all know Katie's favourite time of the year is this one! I've already started my Christmas shopping for this year. But not only is it 7 weeks till Christmas it has officially been just over a month since I moved to live here in Chester and begin my first year at university. 

I can't quite believe it's been a month because so many things have happened and changed for me which has made the month seem like years since I moved here. But this post is for all of the people who are thinking about going to university and what you can expect in your first month of moving away from home from someone who has it fresh in her mind. 

What's it really like moving away from home? 

This is a tricky question because there are some of my flat mates who go home every other weekend and are always seeing their family. But as my mum and dad don't live as close as some of the other girls' do they don't always have the time to come and see me every other weekend. I also can't afford to go home to them because it's going to cost me quite a bit of money as I live further away. But for a while I wanted to move away, look after myself, and make choices for myself and uni has definitely made that a lot easier. I really enjoy being able to go and do something because I want to and not have to ask if it is okay to be doing this. Moving away from home at the age of 18 really opens your eyes to your choices around you as a student and makes you become your own person through these new experiences of the dreaded term "becoming an adult". 

One thing that has become apparent very quickly for me is how quickly and easily it is to settle into a new place. It's strange as you live in your home with your parents for 17 years (mostly) and you never see anywhere else as a home. The one thing uni has made me realise is it doesn't matter where you live because home is whatever you make your home to be. But the main thing I've realised is I don't miss my house, I just miss my mum and dad because they're what I class as home. It's not my actual house that is my home, it's the people I live my life in with it. It makes you a lot more grateful to have your parents around when they do come and see you as I miss them way more than I miss my actual house at home. 

Is it hard to manage your money? 

For me personaly it hasn't been. Before your rent has come out you have to be careful with what you spend as if you don't have your rent money consequences do happen. Not always on purpose but they do, which is another reason why when you apply for your student loan you must fill in your bank details correctly. If you don't, later on when you move in your uni might not be able to take the loan out of your bank or you might have no money going into your bank which means you have nothing to live on. A couple of the girls I live with are going through that process as we speak so it's not fun. But once your rent has gone out this is when you prioritise your money. The way I do it is I keep a track of what I've spent and how much money I have left etc. Then I work out what I have to spend per week until we break up for Christmas, e.g. As of right now I have £58 a week to spend until Christmas - so half on food shopping and the other half for me. 

I always thought I'd be bad at organising my money as whenever I had money at home I just used to spend it on whatever I wanted. But I think because I know I've got more money in my bank I don't have to worry about not having enough for something else which makes me feel more at ease. Whereas when I only had a little bit of money at home as I didn't have a job and the majority of that money would get spent on one certain thing because that money would cover the majority of that item I'd just bought.  

With all that said, it doesn't mean you can't treat yourself from time to time. Recently I've been to Nandos so much because I tried for the first time a couple weeks ago and now I'm pretty addicted. So we go back every couple/ few weeks for a delicious treat. It is really easy to go over your weekly budget as I've definitely done it this week. But it all goes back to prioritising your money, e.g. If you spent £40 on clothes and your budget is £60 per week, you'd just have to spend less on your food shop. Or if you're like myself this week and you know you don't need to go food shopping, spend it on other things you would like or need. The only main thing you need to do is just keep track of what you're spending to make sure you have enough to last you until your next loan comes in. 

Is it difficult to join societies? 

At my uni it hasn't been difficult whatsoever to join societies and get involved in new things. As a first year I feel like people encourage you loads to try thing you've never experienced before, just like uni, it's a once in a life time experience. The main thing I realised whilst joining societies and actually going to the taster days and paying the membership fee etc. It showed me that you can't rely on people to always be interested in what you want to do. If you really want to do something you've gotta go for it alone otherwise you'll probably regret it. 

The societies I've joined are Drama (obviously), Dance, and Swing Dance which is super exciting as you guys now know, I'm really interested in ballroom dancing and as of right now Swing Dancing is as close as I'm going to get to being able to do ballroom based dancing. Also, it's from the 40s/50s which are two of my favourite eras ever. 

It's been lovely to get involved in things I am interested in and to do things for myself. Especially within societies because they're there for you to experience something other than your course. I don't really count as when you're a performer you want to get as much experience as possible before you leave education. But if you're a law student joining a club such as drama or dance maybe that's your way of enjoying yourself in such a serious work based degree. So you don't have to just join similar societies to your course if you don't want to. You are allowed to try new things. 

Is the work load difficult? 

From my experience at this point in time no, but it depends what course your doing. As I'm doing a drama course; for the first four weeks the lecturers have been easing us back into working as the majority of us haven't done any performing since June/July. The four week introduction was very enjoyable for me as I've already learned, experienced, and gained skills in a new way of performing and devising. Which is what makes me look forward to the on coming year and units within my course. 

However, I do know after this reading week is over that we will be getting into all of our other units for the year which means twice as much work as it was before reading week. We are now getting closer to the times where assessments are due and performances are coming up which means I am going to be very busy. I feel at uni this is where becoming an adult really will test me because sometimes I can be lazy. There are days when I need to do something but I put it off as I'm not really in the mood. But prioritising my time is going to be a big thing as I'm devoting my time to my studies, my blog, my friends and family, and of course myself. Uni is very busy and hectic all time as you meet so many different people and do so many different things that sometimes you forget to have a day for you or a few hours to yourself. But never forget to just take a day off or a weekend to regain yourself so you don't feel like your over worked or there's not enough time in your day to do anything because there is. 

What's the best thing to buy when you come to uni? 

I already knew that uni is going to be one of the busiest times in my life and therefore I bought a Filofax to help me organise my life basically. Before I came here I used to just sit at home and do what I want all day because I could. I had no job and nothing to do so I just relaxed and did what I wished but now even though I can still do that, I have to rely on myself to do a lot of things. E.g. Making sure I got to the launderette and making sure I've got enough food in to make dinner and making myself lunch. So many things I used to rely on my parents for I now can't as they're not here to do those things for me. Therefore making good use of your time is the key.

 I bought a Filofax to basically just help me become more organised and to have a place where I can write everything I that I need. So I have everything to do with uni in there, my blog is in there, and I have a personal section in there for anything I need to do for me, e.g. A shopping list. I feel it's helping me keep on top of things because 99.9% of time I have everything written in there twice to make sure I have everything I need. As it's not to big I can take it everywhere with me and have it in my bag. It has become my baby now and I feel naked without it. Just like if you go out and don't have your phone with you. So some form of planner is the main thing you should have when you come to university. Whether it's just for your lessons or your personal life they're super handy and easy to use. 

Is freshers how everyone imagines it? 

Freshers is a week full of new experiences, meeting new people, getting used to a new place, and of course getting absolutely wankered. My girls and I; we went out every other night in freshers which was nice as we had loads of fun nights out but on those days we took a day off we just hung out and actually got to know one another. Apart from just going out freshers is quite important as during the week there is insightful events to give you as much information you need about the uni and certain events and activities that are going on. And of course, it's a chance to discover where everything is on campus and find places etc.

If you're like myself and your uni has more than one campus, mostly likely your campus is slightly smaller than the main campus so it is easy for you to find your way round. Main campus should be easy to navigate as the majority of your societies and events will most likely take place on main campus. If not, there's always maps! 

What have I enjoyed the most so far? 

To be honest, my favourite part has actually been going to uni. I'm paying a lot of money for the course I am doing, therefore why wouldn't you want to actually go and experience what you mainly came here for? 

I've met some great teachers and friends so far who I can't wait to spend the next three years with learning and experiencing things from one another. I'm really happy I've chosen my course as I feel like it is completely for me. Uni really is going above and beyond a college/ a level degree courses because we're exploring more in depth about practitioners and techniques that can be developed into performances, and learning about the technical aspects of theatre with the lights and the sounds, as well as all that there is enough practical work mixed in with written assignments etc. I feel so happy to be where I am and I am insanely happy I chose to come to University of Chester instead of my other choices because I feel so at home and I'm loving every single second of what I'm doing here.

Primark Haul!

Hello my lovelies, I hope you are all well. I am doing really well, I can't quite believe it's almost reading week which means I've been here for almost a month, gasp. Anyway, here for you today readers I have everyone's favourite haul type post which as you can tell by the title is a Primark Haul. Enjoy...

I didn't actually need anything in Primark, the main reason we went in was because Meg needed some new trackies and a water bottle. Myself, I just saw loads of nice things and gave in. So the first thing I picked up were these knee high socks. I've never really worn knee high socks, so we'll see how we can work with these. But I really like the pattern and as they're black and grey I felt like they'd be more subtle to wear especially in the current autumn/ winter months. Also as they're black and white they're quite versatile to go with many outfits.

I got these because recently I've seen a lot of tutorials on how to curl your hair with these hair doughnuts. Which I thought was great as it doesn't damaged your hair and you get voluptuous curls. So I have tried and tested it and it does work. The only issue is at the moment, I need to find a way to get all my hair into the doughnut. I had to get the smallest ones because I have very thin hair and I know for a fact all my hair wont get round any of the larger ones. 

But they're also handy if you want to have a ballerina bun, they're a quick and easy hairstyle to put up, and they make your hair look really put together when in reality it took you 5 minutes to do. I'm really happy I got them.

This was too 'me' not to pick up. For those poeple who know they know I'm a lover of lace, floral, and vintage looking decorations like this one above. I just really liked it and I've now hung it on my noticeboard.

These earrings I am absolutely in love with. I don't have many dangly earrings and I saw these and was like 'yes, yes, yes, I've gotta have them' so I picked them up. I think they're going to look gorgeous if I go out and have my hair up or something. They're the kind of jewellery item where you wouldn't need to wear anything else because they're bold and beautiful on their own. I just loved the colour of the gems and feathers; perfect for a pale skinned girl like myself.

Recently I've been looking for a new purse as I've been using my orange/ peach coloured one and now that it's autumn and I've got an emerald coloured handbag I wanted a more autumnal purse to go with it. I couldn't find any emerald ones or any near to the colour. But I saw this black and white one and loved it so much I bought it. It's got lots of different compartments for debit cards and loyalty cards etc, it also has two compartments for money. The one at the back and there's one within the purse which is great for lots of change. One thing I have noticed it also has deeper side pockets which is great for receipts as they're not really on show because of how deep the slotted side parts are.

I bought some more Powder Puffs which are my holy grail product for when applying my Maybelline Matte Maker powder. It's just so easy to use, it picks up the products so well, they're soft, and they fit in with the powder itself when I use them so I can top up on the go.

This next decorative item is again for my room. Slowly I am buying more and more room items to go into my room just to make it feel prettier and make it feel more like I can call my bedroom whilst I'm here in student accommodation. As even though I've settled in, I still don't completely feel like it's 100% mine yet. So with a little more TLC and other things it'll get there. So I got this just because I thought it was nice.

And finally, I had to buy these socks. I honestly don't think there's a reason not to buy them. They're slipper socks but they dont have the horrible rubber bits underneath that act as grip like you'd get on normal slippers. They're just super soft just like slippers would be, I'll let you in on a little secret, they're even softer than my slippers themselves, yep. But seriously if you guys have really cold feet a lot like myself these are brilliant. Especially if you don't really wanna wear slippers. I wear these everyday with and without slippers and my feet stay super warm and toasty in there. I wore these to uni one day this week with ugg boots and my feet were extra warm which'll be great when we get right into the heart of winter.

Hello Stranger...

Hello my lovelies, I hope you are all well and haven't missed me too much. I am aware that it has been an extremely long while since we caught up with one another and that is because I've moved and I'm at university!
  I know I kept you all in the dark about which uni I was going to but I am at University of Chester and I'm studying Drama and Theatre Studies. So for these last three weeks we have been split into groups of about fifteen and we've all been assigned different teachers. My group and I have been doing lots of work with our movement teacher and we've been learning some really interesting devising techniques that I've never explored at college. 

The techniques we've visited are: 

• Mirroring 
• The Sphere 
• Flow
• Whoosh
• Lower Centre 

There are a few others we've been learning but these are examples of things we've been learning for these three weeks. I'm really looking forward to the rest of this year on my course because I am actually beginning to see and learn how completely different level 4 is at university compared to level 3 at college. I'm really looking forward to the rest of my time at university after these few weeks and I feel ready to do this degree. 

But apart from the course itself, I've also joined lots of societies on campus; Drama, Dance - Contemporary and Jazz, and Swing Dancing. I've really been enjoying all of these because they're all really fun and completely up my street. Recently I performed an audition for the Drama societies Christmas show and the cast list is being posted tomorrow, which is so exciting; I'll let you guys know how that goes down. 

  I've been picking up Swing Dancing really quickly and I really love it. We've been learning the Lindy Hop and the Charleston which haven't been that difficult to be honest, I've really been enjoying it. I think I've finally found a style of dance that I can actually excel really far in. 

  Contemporary and Jazz have been a little more difficult only because I'm not used to doing them but I am determined to stick at it and improve by the end of the year. Jazz is the one I'm finding most difficult at the moment as it's like musical dancing but 10x faster.

But apart from all of the university classes and societies I've been really getting into, obviously we've got to talk about freshers. Now freshers week was full of good, bad, awkward, funny, and memorable times and it really was where all of our housemates bonded and became friends.

  Fresher's week was really lovely as we all virtually spent every day together and we're all really good friends now. We went out almost every night to the on campus bar and the drinks were super cheap; £1.50 for a Malibu and Coke, yes please!

  But I enjoyed every moment of freshers but at the end of it I was happy for it to be over because I was tired and just wanted to get into doing lessons at uni. I've made so many close friends already and I cant wait to see what the rest of this year and the three years brings my way.
